The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre is one of the city’s most important theatrical companies. Its vast repertory is continually expanding, with works by local authors alongside the classics of Chinese and western theatre. Recently staged with great success, one of the key productions of the 2009-2010 season was a new edition of Shakespeare’s Richard III.
DESCRIPTION

Digital effects and luminous power for a winning combination

In one of the poet’s most intense tragedies, the life and personality of Richard III stand out on the backdrop of a highly varied historical dramatization with crimes, wars and dramatics moments.
The director decided to give an exceptional visual impact to such an eventful plot: SGM Giotto Digital 1500 fixtures were used along with Giotto Spot 1500 units to set different locations and times of day, and at the same time strengthen the performance’s expressive profile.
Digital effects combined with luminous power enabled to project in the different phases of the show extraordinarily defined forms and colours, thanks also to the application of various gobos. The same CMY colour mixing system on the Giotto Digital and Spot 1500 also enabled the fixtures’ simultaneous work to form a single perfectly combined result.

The result

Dramatic "black out" effects thanks to the digital iris diaphragm, vivid animations projected in the scenes with ghosts: the special application of the DLP® technology of the Giotto Digital 1500 and the exceptional brightness of the Giotto Spot have set a new standard in theatre lighting.
The director was able to experiment with the potential of fixtures that eliminate traditional fixtures’ mechanical limits and offer an expressive variety rarely found on a theatre stage.
